Stock whips, in various
forms, were common in Britain until the early 20th Century.
To some extent, they are the archetypal British whip. The
spread of the motor car and lorry gradually destroyed the
domestic market but, until the Second World War, English
whip makers were still exporting stocks to Australia to be
turned into finished whips. After the War, stock whips remained in use
in some areas, as a shepherd's tool, but their use
inevitably died out as the skills needed to repair and replace
them were lost.
Recent years have seen a
small resurgence in the use of crack-able whips for
shepherding; as well as interest in the use of the stock
whip as a performer's whip. Cheap stock whips are ideal first
whips for anyone who doesn't want to invest a large amount
of money, but nevertheless wants a whip that will give long
service and is easy to crack. Finer stock whips are great
for precision target work and technical routines.
I'm pleased to offer these Australian cow and kangaroo hide stock
whips and yard whips - something for every budget and level of competence.

Cow Hide
Australian Stock Whips
For sheer
durability, probably the best value leather whips
you can find. I try to keep a few stock
whips on hand - check out my In
Stockpage to see if I have any ready to send out.
Otherwise, delivery time on
cow hide stock whips is
approximately 6-8 weeks. Made from Alum tanned 'white' hide - you'll be hard pushed to find
tougher cowhide whips; and you won't find leather
bullwhips this good anywhere near these prices!
Whips like this
are ideal for learning the basic throws and simple
routines, and for basic target work. Their low cost
and thick hide makes them a great choice for use in circumstances when
you may hesitate to bring out your finely plaited
roo hide whips. Both lengths make great workshop
whips; and working whips for outdoor use.
4ft
(1.2m) Yard Whips
Well made, to a basic
design. Each yard whip
has a 4 plait overlay on a tapered
core of the same leather; with white hide fall; on a cane
stock with simple turk's head hand part.
A yard whip has about the same reach as a six foot
bullwhip; and is the sensible choice for a
stock whip to use indoors*; or for a kid's whip**, or for anyone looking to practice
energetic multiple cracking routines. A lot of these
whips are bought by people looking for their first
whip for learning with.
*if you have
sufficient space.
**with appropriate
adult supervision.

5.5
foot Stock Whips
The same design as
the whips above, just longer. These are medium weight whips with
a slower action than those above, making them well suited to learning the basic
throws and routines.

Australian Stock Whips with
Fully Plaited Handles
Beautifully finished whips in a
range of colours. Medium weight, with heavy duty red
hide falls and plaited crackers for durability. I offer these in 5 foot lengths as
standard; but 4
and 6 and 8 foot whips can be made for you. 16
plait whips are also available, and are very fine
indeed. Delivery time on these whips is
approximately 8 weeks; although I do try to keep a few
in stock ready for immediate despatch - check out my In
Stockpage to see if I have any ready to send out.
8 plait in black and saddle tan
12 plait in whisky and saddle tan
5 foot Australian Stock Whips
with full-plait stock
5 foot is a good thong length for general purpose
stock whips: slow enough for easy learning, long enough for tricks
such as wrapping, short enough for lively multiple cracking routines.
These are medium weight whips with a
fluid action from new. The 8 plaits drop to 6 at the point, allowing
for the use of slightly wider lace for enhanced durability. The 12
plaits have a finer look and smoother feel in use, with a tight 8
plait point.
Varied patterns are used to decorate the handles,
including single diamonds and coachwork, with decorative knots
covering the ends of the keepers and a short section of coachwork at
the top of each thong. Very nice whips at a good price.
