two types: English blacksnakes
and pocket snake whips. Click

you can be sure that these are
quality whips designed to be easy to crack, well behaved
and exceptionally durable: high design values, and the
use of the very best specialist whip leathers available, mean that your
snake whip will still be cracking many years from now.
Shorter
snake whips are great first whips for the indoor whip cracker,
while the longer ones offer more scope for tricks and advanced work.
All of my
English snake whips
have the following
common features:
Dense, responsive thongs
- built over tightly packed leather shot sacks.
Reinforcement at
the butt end, in every layer of the whip - for durability and a positive feel in use.
Very smooth,
neatly finished, overlay - with 8, 12 or 16
strands of lace in the braid.
Neatly dropped strands and an
even taper - 8 plait whips usually have no strands dropped.
100% roo hide - only
the very best specialist whip leather is used in these whips.
Two tone whips
cost the same as single colour ones - stock colours only.

brown) 12 plait, 4 foot snake whips. Shot
loaded core, plaited belly, cowhide bolster,
heavy duty redhide fall, wrist loop. Tightly
plaited, with a dense belly for easy
cracking.
These are supplied to me as standard
snake whips but their flexibility, from new,
half inclines me to describe them as pocket
snake whips.
These whips are designed to be easy to
crack from new, and physically tough; and
that's exactly what they are. There is no
fancy braiding, and the knots are functional
rather than decorative, so you're not paying
for time spent making the whip look nice
with no gain in handling. They won't
retain their liveliness as well as the
higher priced whips below, but they are
easier to crack from new, with a consistent action; and therefore a great choice for
your first whip.
In terms of value, you'll struggle to
find better.

Once
broken in, pocket snake whips are designed to coil more tightly
than blacksnakes, whilst still retaining liveliness. These whips
will eventually break in to fit comfortably in a large coat pocket
or small bag; and are therefore a very practical short whip*.
Although initially created as
an economical first leather whip, good design and the highest
quality materials have ensured that my pocket
snake whips have proved their handling and durability alongside
more expensive snake whips from other makers around the
world.
Starting at £95
including UK post and packing, they are one of the best value
good quality kangaroo hide snake whips available.
Light to medium-weight, neatly
finished, and with a very predictable action, these whips are made with repetitive indoor target
work in mind.
With practice, the 3 footers can
be used almost anywhere and are likely to be getting plenty of use
when longer, more visually impressive, whips are languishing in
the kit bag due to lack of space.
The 4
footers have a more flowing action that is satisfying to master,
but require that little bit more space, so can be a less practical
choice.
Either way, if you only ever buy
one good quality single tail whip, you won't go wrong with one of these!
*Longer
whips for outdoor work can be made but, unless coiled size is
a big issue, I would suggest a blacksnake for such work.

3 foot Snake Whips
My
kangaroo hide English Blacksnakes are tightly plaited, lively
whips that perform well and are designed to give many years of service.
With their all-roo 'whip within a
whip' construction featuring 4, 6 or 8 plait bellies, these are heavier snake whips than the
pocket snakes, with wider thongs and a leisurely action. The additional layers in the belly, and more reinforcement in the upper part of the
thong, mean that this design lends itself to a wider range of techniques and to
heavier use.
The three footers are very practical
whips for use in confined spaces. If you are likely to be using your
whip when there are other people in close proximity, you may be better
with one of these than with something longer. Relatively quick to master
and extremely predictable, these are among my best selling whips.
At this length, the difference between
whips with a different number of strands in the plait is most
noticeable.
8 plait black snakes are
exceptionally tough and long lasting snake whips at about two thirds the price of
the same length 16 plait ones. Good choice for a whip that is going to be
used on a more or less daily basis, with a simple elegance that is
pleasing to the eye.
12 plait snake whips are attractive looking whips with single
diamond and six seam work in the upper thong and a
minimal number of strands dropped from the braid. Arguably
possessing a smoother
action; and better compression of the core; they offer a compromise
between the functionality of the 8 plaits
and the beauty of the 16 plaits.
16 plait blacksnake whips offer smoother
handling than the 8 plaits. They crack effortlessly and break
in more quickly to give a really fluid action, but retain
their liveliness due to reinforcement of the belly and the
extra compression that comes with the use of narrow strands. These whips
have 8 plait bellies, so really are a whip within a whip. In terms of beauty,
a 16 plait whip wins every time. These whips feature a variety
of braiding patterns in the upper thong, and will give the
owner many years of pleasure.

4 foot Snake Whips
4 foot blacksnakes are very elegant whips that 'flow'
more than their shorter counterparts. Very fluid once broken in, the
extra length offers a wider range of techniques and the additional
satisfaction of mastering a whip that requires that little bit more
sensitivity for spot-on target work. Easy to crack, with a fairly slow
action, they are a pleasure to own.
The comments regarding different numbers of strands in
the plait remain valid at this length, with 8 plait snake whips being arguably best
for daily use; the 16 plaits offering the smoothest action from new and finest plaiting; and the 12 plaits sitting comfortably between the
two.
As with the 3 foot black snakes, each 4 foot snake
whip has a small plaited hanging loop that won't get in the way as a
wrist loop can.
