These are great bullwhips for fast routines and indoor target work; or as first high quality whips for younger whip crackers.

The difference in handling, between higher and lower plait bull whips, is most noticeable at this length:

8 plait bullwhips are a great choice for your first bullwhip, especially if you're teaching yourself, and for heavy use. I intend them primarily for performers; and anyone else looking for a good roo hide work whip for use on a more or less daily basis. Made with double 4 plait bellies, with no strands dropped from the overlay, they break in more slowly than the higher plait whips but still have a smooth and predictable action.
12 plait bullwhips are my original design, and still my favourite; offering much of the toughness of the 8 plaits with a finer look arising from the narrower lace with six seam braiding in the upper thong. These whips have 4 and 6 plait bellies, giving better compression of the core and a smoother action.
16 plait bullwhips are arguably the most beautiful whips that are still tough enough to use on a regular basis. With 4 and 8 plait bellies, they tend to break in more quickly, but retain their liveliness well due to reinforcement in every layer of the whip and the additional compression that is possible from the use of narrow lace in the belly as well as the overlay.

All of my 4 foot bullwhips have 8 inch handles as standard, but different lengths can be used to suit your taste.

5 foot (1.5m) Bullwhips

5 foot bull whips have a slower, more flowing action but are still responsive enough for most fast routines. They are also great target whips, long enough to be visually impressive for many tricks whilst short enough for most stages.

The differences in handling, arising from different numbers of strands in the lace, start to become less noticeable at this length: the wider lace of an 8 plait whip will generally retain it's strength (and therefore the whip's liveliness) somewhat better than the narrower lace of a 16 plait whip; and this makes such whips ideal for heavy, regular use in training or work situations.

On the other hand, the 16 plait whips will please collectors and enthusiasts who seek a very fine looking whip that doesn't compromise physical toughness and longevity. The thick hide (in comparison to many other finely plaited whips) enables very tight braiding and good strength retention over time, giving a precise feel and easier maintenance as the whip ages. The best leather from as many skins as necessary is used in the overlay; and reinforcement added to every layer of the whip. All of these design features combine to produce a great whip for anyone looking for an immensely durable, finely plaited whip that will give many years of reliable service.

A 12 plait whip, of course, sits nicely between the 8 and 16 plaits.

Whichever strand count your taste and budget dictate, a five foot bullwhip is a good choice for fast routines and as a first whip for smaller adults and youths; or for anyone else who wants a slightly longer whip that can still be used in many indoor spaces.

These whips typically have 10 inch handles for the most satisfying smoothest action. A longer handle can be used on whips bought primarily for target work.

6 foot 8 plait black bullwhip. Made for a lady customer, the handle width was adapted to ensure that it would be comfortable to use for prolonged periods.

6 foot (1.8m) bullwhips

In the UK, the 6 foot bull whip seems to be the archetypal whip; and with good reason: at this length the basics are quickly mastered, allowing the user to become extremely accurate while also providing a smooth action for multiple cracking routines that (should) look effortless to spectators. This is the length that performers tend to use most when space allows, and it is the length that most sport and hobby whip crackers learn with. It also tends to be the length used in targeting competitions.

Used by a competent whip master or mistress practicing multiple cracking routines, a 6 foot bullwhip becomes very elegant indeed. On the other hand, whilst learning, the leisurely roll-out of these whips makes them feel as if the bullwhip is doing the work for you.

They are therefore an ideal length for most novices to learn with; and enable improvers to learn new routines without the hectic feel that sometimes comes with shorter whips.

The same comments apply, regarding the number of strands used in the plait, as for the five foot whips. The 8 plait bull whips are very popular performers' whips, and first whips for self-teaching novices, being tough, easy to crack and very predictable; but it has to be said that there is something truly beautiful about the sinuous grace of a 6 foot, 16 plait bullwhip. If you are an admirer of fine leather work finished to the highest standard, you'll be pleased you made that extra investment.

At this length, most people will need an outdoor space in which to practice.

8 foot (2.1m) bullwhips

8 foot bullwhips are visually impressive whips that have a slow, satisfying roll-out. They are not, in my view, ideal beginners' whips: we've introduced a lot of people to whip cracking over the years and found the best bullwhip for learning with is usually a 6 footer.

If you already know the basic throws, there's something very satisfying about the slow, flowing action of a big whip - whether you're using it for multiple cracking or tricks and target work.

My 8 foot bullwhips are relatively light for long whips, so are less tiring to use than some others. They have a smooth action from new, and are a real pleasure to throw. Choose from 10, 12 or 14 inch handles (confirmed at the time of order). The relatively thick hide in the overlay is resistant to all the abuse that the points of long whips inevitable get.

Performers and trainers looking for a tool that they can use, day in, day out, with minimal maintenance, in all manner of environments, are recommended to choose an 8 or 12 plait bullwhip. Collectors and enthusiasts will no doubt treasure the beauty and handling of a 16 plait whip.

5ft 12pl Indy-style bullwhip with 8 inch handle; with 12 plait snake whips; commissioned by a customer supplying whips under Royal Warrent.

For Indiana Jones fans: The 'Dr Jones Variation' gives an Indy style bullwhip with a longer handle and 100% roo hide construction; providing a whip that is well suited to multiple cracking routines and target work whilst not looking out of place among your other Indy gear. Single diamond work runs the entire length of the 10* inch handle, with 4 seam plaiting running the length of the thong. The knots are the same double and triple Turk's heads as the original Indy bullwhips, and the overall effect is finished off with a plaited wrist loop.

These are not copies of the original Indiana Jones style bullwhips. They are designed to be slightly lighter than the originals and consequently (in my view), easier to handle - especially for prolonged training sessions or multiple cracking.

Available on any 6, 8, 12 or 16 plait bullwhip.

Top Tip: The 'screen accurate' specification for Indy style bull whips is natural tan, 12 plait; the length varied from scene to scene so there is no 'correct' length. If you're new to bullwhips and, from a whip cracking point of view, want to get the most enjoyment from your bullwhip, my advice is not to go for anything longer than 6 foot - 8 foot is generally considered more 'screen accurate', but is not, in my view, ideal for learning with.
