Beginners'
Budget Bullwhips

If
you ask around, you will be probably be told that the best
bullwhip for learning with is also
the highest quality whip that you can afford. But if
you're new to whip cracking, and not sure how much your
interest will develop; or you just want the bullwhip to
enjoy an hour or two of whip cracking most weekends, you
may not want to pay for a top of the range bullwhip.
The
bull whips on this page are good quality, reasonably priced,
general purpose bullwhips. They will please novice whip
crackers looking for an economical first whip; and
anybody else who wants a reliable bullwhip that's easy
to crack, won't fall apart (without severe abuse); and doesn't cost the Earth.
If
you already know you're hooked, and want the very
highest quality bullwhip
from the very outset,
please take a look at my 8,12
and 16 plait English Bullwhips.
If, you
want the best quality possible in a bullwhip
that doesn't cost quite so much, then this is the page
for you. These bullwhips are
still not cheap but, as with most things in life, the
words 'quality' and 'cheap' tend only be
found together when somebody is trying to pull the wool
over your eyes. I have yet to find lower priced leather
bullwhips in the UK, that are
anywhere near this quality.
I
offer two types.
-
12
plait Australian bullwhips. These imported bullwhips are
lighter than my English whips; so may be a better
buy for young people and anyone else who prefers a
light whip. They feature single diamond hand-parts, with similar knotwork to
Indy-style whips, so may
appeal to Indy fans who want an easy to crack whip
and can't afford (or justify) the expense of a full
replica.
-
6 plait, all-roo, English bullwhips.
These are good quality
training whips; and difficult to ignore if you're
looking for your first whip on a limited budget;
especially if you expect to be using the whip quite a
lot.
The English bullwhips will, I think, take you
further in developing your skills but the Australian
bullwhips are a little cheaper, look great, need less
breaking in and are therefore a little easier to use
when new. Good choice for a show, and for anyone who
wants a reliable whip for less technical work.
Australian
bullwhips typically take 6-8 weeks to arrive. Check my
blog for latest news on delivery times of bullwhips made
by myself. I try to keep one or two bullwhips in stock -
check the in stock page
to see if I have an bullwhips that are ready to
despatch.

Australian Bullwhips
No-nonsense
economy bullwhips.
Remember that bullwhips are measured from the butt
to the point, so the fall and cracker add 2.5 to 3
feet to the whip's range. If you're not sure what
length to choose for the space you will be using
it in, please feel free to get in touch. |

Some
of the whips supplied for Zorro
Six
foot Australian bullwhip |
4 foot (1.2m)
Bull Whips: 12 plait bullwhips in black or
'tan' - the latter meaning anything from natural
through to dark brown.
I supplied a number of the
4 foot bull whips for the stage version of Zorro;
which is touring the UK in 2008 before finding
a home in the West End; as well as to the Royal
National Theatre in London.
These bullwhips are fairly light whips with tightly
plaited overlays on plaited cores with cow hide
bolsters. They are entirely functional in their
design, with knotwork that is secure rather than decorative. A six plait
wrist loop enables easy storage.
The four footers are
great first whips for indoor
target work; their light weight means that they
are less fatiguing to use for long periods than
some other whips.
The six footers have a
light, easy action that makes them ideal for
mastering basic throws and simple routines, such
as figure 8's. This is the length that most
people start learning with. It is
about as long as can be accommodated on set in a
large theatre; and, if you have the space, they
provide quite a spectacle. The ordinary enthusiast
will usually use this length outdoors. The six
footers are a little light for learning technical multiple
cracking, but they will please anyone looking for a
decent whip for their first steps into whip cracking
- and at a much lower price than one would usually
pay in the UK for a 12 plait bullwhip of this length.

These are heavier
whips than the Aussie bullwhips, above, designed for
durability in the hands of the novice. They will break in
more slowly than those whips and, even though they have
fewer strands in the overlay, high design values impart
handling that one normally associates with higher plait
whips. Available in a range of
colours, with two-tone bullwhips costing the same as single
colour ones.
These are slightly de-tuned versions of my
higher
plait English Bullwhips, made to broadly the same
design:
-
6
layer naturally falling thong including 4 plaited layers,
starting with a tightly plaited and reinforced
core.
-
10
or 12 inch, balanced, steel lined handle
-
3 plait optional hanging
loop (add £5)
-
No
extra charge for a second stock colour.
-
Decorative
knots and single diamond work at the butt and
transition.
-
'Economy
Indy' version available at the same price.
How do these whips compare with my
higher plait ones? These whips are
significantly cheaper than my higher plait whips, and offer
performance and durability that should please anyone who is
just starting out; as well as non-specialist performers
seeking a good looking bullwhip that will do what it's told
and will last well. I would expect these whips to assist
your learning through all the basic throws and routines,
target cutting and tricks; and into more technical work.
Novices seeking a whip that will take them
from absolute beginner through to expert whip handler;
people who already have some experience; specialist
performers; and anyone else seeking the best possible
handling, precision and longevity will probably prefer my
high quality 8
- 16 plait bullwhips. |
